How the test grade calculator works
Every question is worth the same, so the score is (questions − wrong) ÷ questions × 100. On a 20-question test, 3 wrong gives 17 ÷ 20 = 85%. You can count the number correct instead if that's easier.
The letter grade comes from the 10-point scale with plus and minus unless you pick another from the Scale menu under the calculator or change single cutoffs with "edit cutoffs". The grading scale page compares the common scales. To turn several test scores into a course grade, use the grade calculator; to average them, use the grade average calculator.
Half points
Turn on half points in the test grade calculator when some answers earn half credit. The number wrong can then go in steps of 0.5, and the chart lists every half step.
Printing the grading chart
The chart lists the percentage and letter grade for every possible number wrong, from 0 up to the number of questions. "Print chart" prints only the chart. Grade Calculator Plus prints the whole grading chart for tests of up to 200 questions, half points included, in tables of 25 rows.
Example
A 30-question test with 4.5 wrong, half points on: 25.5 ÷ 30 = 85%, a B. With 6 wrong it drops to 24 ÷ 30 = 80%, a B-.
Press "Try an example" to fill in the 30-question test with 4.5 wrong.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a test grade?
Subtract the number wrong from the number of questions, divide by the number of questions and multiply by 100. A 25-question test with 4 wrong is 21 ÷ 25 × 100 = 84%. This works when every question is worth the same; for questions worth different points, divide points earned by points possible.
What grade is 7 wrong out of 40?
82.5%, which is a B- on the 10-point scale with plus and minus and a B on the plain 10-point scale. That's 33 correct out of 40. Enter 40 questions in the test grade calculator and the chart shows the score for every other number wrong too.
How do half points work?
Half points let you mark an answer as half right. Turn the option on and the number wrong can be a whole number or a half, such as 2.5. Each half point is worth half a question, so 2.5 wrong on a 20-question test is 87.5%.
