Semester Grade Calculator

Updated by Grade Calculator Plus

Your semester grade comes from two term grades and a semester exam, and the semester grade calculator combines all three into one number. If your school calls the terms quarters, enter your two quarter grades as terms 1 and 2. If you haven't taken the exam yet, leave it blank and enter a target to see the score you need.

More on grading scales

Enter both term grades, then the exam grade or a target.

How the semester grade calculator works

It multiplies each grade by its weight and adds the results: semester grade = term 1 × w1 + term 2 × w2 + exam × w3, with each weight written as a decimal, so 40% is 0.4. Pick a preset, 40/40/20 or 45/45/10, or enter custom weights.

The presets are examples, not a rule; use the weights your school publishes. If custom weights don't add up to 100, the calculator rescales them and tells you.

Finding the exam score you need

Leave the exam blank and enter a target semester grade. The calculator averages your term grades by their weights, then uses the same final-exam methodas the final grade calculator, with the exam weight as the final weight.

The result gets one of four labels: secured (even a 0 on the exam keeps your target), reachable (between 0 and 100), perfect (exactly 100) or unreachable (over 100). Grade Calculator Plus tells you the exam score you need for your semester target, and when it's out of reach it shows the best semester grade you can still get.

Midterms, quarters and other splits

The semester grade calculator handles two terms and one exam. It works as a midterm grade calculator only when the midterm takes the exam's place: enter it in the exam box. For three terms or six-weeks grades, or extra assessments, enter each part as a category in the weighted calculator.

Example

With 45/45/10 weights, terms of 84 and 90 and an exam of 75: 84 × 0.45 + 90 × 0.45 + 75 × 0.1 = 37.8 + 40.5 + 7.5 = 85.8%, a B.

Before the exam, with 40/40/20 weights, terms of 88 and 92 and a target of 90, you need 90 on the exam.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my semester grade?

Multiply each term grade and your exam score by their weights and add them up. With 40/40/20 weights, terms of 88 and 92 and an exam of 80 give 35.2 + 36.8 + 16 = 88%. Check your school's handbook for the weights it uses.

How do I find my semester grade without the exam?

Before the exam, your grade so far is the weighted average of your two term grades. Leave the exam blank in the semester grade calculator and enter the semester grade you want: it shows the exam score you need for that target, and the best semester grade you could still get.

What weights should I use?

Use your school's. They're usually in the student handbook or the course syllabus. The two presets here, 40/40/20 and 45/45/10, are examples of how two terms and an exam can be split, not a standard. If your weights don't add up to 100, the calculator rescales them.
