Grade Average Calculator
Updated by Grade Calculator Plus
Average a list of grades as percentages that each count the same, as points earned out of points possible, or as letter grades. The grade average calculator also shows the letter grade your average earns.
Enter your grades to see the average.
How the grade average calculator works
- Plain average: add the percentages and divide by how many there are. 90, 85 and 77 average to 84%.
- Points average: total points earned divided by total points possible, so a bigger assignment counts for more.
- Letter average: each letter becomes grade points, the points are averaged, and the result turns back into the nearest letter on your scale. A tie goes to the higher letter.
If your grades sit in weighted categories such as Homework 20% and Exams 50%, use the weighted grade calculatorinstead. For a running course grade, use the grade calculator.
Plain average or points average?
Use the one your teacher uses: a plain average counts every assignment the same, and a points average counts bigger assignments more. In points mode, type each score in Points earned and Points possible: 45 and 50 for 45/50. Take 45/50, 18/20 and 30/40. As percentages that's 90, 90 and 75, a plain average of 85%. As points it's 93 out of 110, or 84.55%, because the 40-point test you did worst on is bigger than the 20-point quiz.
Averaging letter grades
The grade average calculator turns each letter into grade points: A+ and A are both 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0, and so on down to F at 0. Because A+ and A count the same, an average never comes out as an A+. On a scale without plus and minus, only A to F are offered.
Grade Calculator Plus averages letter grades through grade points, so A, B and C come out as 3.0, a B.
Example
Letter grades of B+, B and C+ give (3.3 + 3.0 + 2.3) ÷ 3 = 2.87 grade points. The nearest letter is B, at 3.0, so the average is a B.
Frequently asked questions
How do I average my grades?
Add your percentages and divide by how many there are: 88, 92 and 79 make 259, and 259 ÷ 3 = 86.33%. If your grades are points out of different totals, add the earned points and the possible points separately, then divide the first total by the second. The grade average calculator above does either.
Why is my points average different from my percentage average?
A points average weights each assignment by its size, while a percentage average counts every assignment the same. A low score on a long test pulls the points average down more. With 45/50, 18/20 and 30/40, the percentage average is 85% and the points average is 84.55%.
How do you average letter grades?
Turn each letter into grade points, A as 4.0, B as 3.0, C as 2.0 and so on, take the average, then match it to the nearest letter. A, A- and B+ average to 3.67, which is an A-. When the average sits exactly between two letters, it goes to the higher one.
